Kevin Magnussen has announced that he will not be participating in the 24 Hours of Daytona after undergoing surgery to remove a cyst in his hand this week.

Magnussen looked set to drive an MDK Motorsport-run Porsche 911 GT3 at the event from January 28-29, but the Dane revealed last week that doctors had found a cyst in his hand that needed to be removed ahead of the 2023 Formula 1 season.

Earlier in the off-season, Magnussen had taken part in the Gulf 12 Hours alongside his father Jan, and was due for a follow-up outing at Daytona. But, under doctor’s advice, the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix pole-sitter has pulled out of the event.

Explaining the situation on social media, Magnussen said: “The hand surgery went fine, but I have been advised by the doctors not to drive at Daytona. Wishing everyone at MDK Motorsport a great weekend over there.”

Magnussen will now turn his attentions to getting fit for the upcoming Formula 1 season, in which he will be partnered by his new team mate, Nico Hulkenberg, at Haas. Hulkenberg takes the place of fellow German Mick Schumacher, who has since moved into a reserve role at Mercedes.
